The undeniable attraction of porn twins

Any local newspaper is only as big as the village/town/city/area it serves, but the sky’s the limit when it comes to attracting an audience online.

In two years at the Sunderland Echo our most popular story by far has been the tale of two Wearside twins who revealed a secret double life of escorting and porn movie stardom to their aghast family. The story will soon pass the 200,000 hits mark and attracts a steady flow of visitors from all across the globe.

The boost to our traffic is handy, but a glance at our key search terms returns some rather unsavoury criteria. And when your porn twin headlines float to the top of your ‘most popular stories’ list it does jar against the family values that underpin our print and web propositions. I suppose the guys at the BBC wince a little too every time that ‘man marries goat’ story tops their hitlist…

Years ago the advent of web publishing opened every journalist’s eyes to the phenomenal power of more offbeat news stories when it comes to attracting an audience. Some journalists and websites rabbidly pursue unique users by shoe-horning random tales into their pages. I try to avoid making that rod for my own back (as you only have to match your hits next month), but if you’ve got a cracking story that will tantalise readers from well beyond your patches’ borders market it, market it some more, and market it again for good measure.

The porn twins tale was posted on numerous social bookmarking and news aggregation sites. And, why not? As journalists it’s our prerogative to attract as many eyes to our words as possible. And it would seems there are few things more attractive than a pair of porn twins…
